DVD PLAYHOUSE—DECEMBER 2011
By Allen Gardner

THE RULES OF THE GAME (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members, Renoir’s son Alain, actress Mila Parely. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

MANGUS! (WolfeVideo) A high school senior (Ryan Boggus) in a small town hopes to live up to his family’s tradition of the oldest male playing the lead in the local production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Goofy and broad (in the extreme) comedy recalls the early “trailer trash” comedies of John Waters, and is shot with a masterful eye for the tacky. Not for everyone’s taste, to be sure, but writer/director Ash Christian certainly has a unique voice, and is one to watch. Nice support from Jennifer Coolidge, Heather Matarazzo, John Waters, and Leslie Jordan. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by cast and crew; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

VAMPIRES (IFC Films) Aptly described as the This is Spinal Tap of vampire pictures, this quirky “mockumentary” tells the “true” story of a vampire clan who struggle to keep themselves together while getting along with their neighbors, and quietly assimilating with regular society. Very funny with the appropriate dash of darkness thrown in for a little spice. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

THE WAVE (Sundance Selects) In present-day Germany, a high school teacher attempts to stir up his lethargic students by devising an experiment that will explain what Totalitarianism is. He calls it The Wave. Within days, The Wave has taken over the school, and the teacher finds his lesson coming to life in an all too real way. Extremely well-executed film across the board, although this is a story that has been told so often over the past fifty years, that it brings little if any new light to the subject. Still, worth seeing if you’re a fan of skillful filmmaking. Bonuses: Interviews with cast and crew; Featurette; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

KIDNAPPED (IFC Films) An upper middle class family move into a supposedly secure gated community outside of Madrid, only to find themselves under siege from a gang of Eastern European kidnappers. While one takes dad on a tour of all the nearby ATMs, the other two terrify and torture the mother and daughter until dad returns with the dough. Technically impressive but otherwise incredibly unpleasant and nihilistic, even by the genre’s standards. Winner of Best Picture and Best Director at the 2010 Fantastic Fest, so judge for yourself. Bonuses: Featurette; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

BEHIND THE MASK (aka THE SHADOW BEHIND THE MASK) (MGM/Fox) Pulp fiction hero the Shadow aka Lamont Cranston (Kane Richmond), finds himself framed for the murder of a sleazy, blackmailing journalist. As he attempts to clear his name, the Shadow finds the killer always one step ahead of him, not to mention the interfering antics of Cranston’s fiancée, Margo Lane (Barbara Read). Some clever touches, particularly with the murderer’s game of cat-and-mouse, but this 1946 cheapie sinks when it tries to be a comedy, with no laughs to be found. Fans of the Shadow are sure to be disappointed, in spite of direction from B-movie legend Phil Karlson. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

KILL A DRAGON (MGM/Fox) Cheesy, fun drive-in flick from 1967 has a group of Chinese villagers hiring a mercenary (Jack Palance, wonderful as always) and his band of martial arts experts to defend them from a vicious gangster (Fernando Lamas) whose cache of TNT has washed up on their shores, which he wants back. Enjoyable for its sheer trashiness, although the sight of Aldo Ray in drag might put off even the most die-hard B-movie fan. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

WELCOME TO L.A. (MGM/Fox) Writing/directing debut of Robert Altman protégée Alan Rudolph is a low key gem presenting a perfect time capsule of mid-70s (1977 to be exact) L.A., and the overall feeling of ennui that hangs over a generation of spoiled ex-hippies who quickly realize how empty their lives are. Dream ensemble cast includes Keith Carradine, Harvey Keitel, Sally Kellerman, Geraldine Chaplin, and Harvey Keitel. Produced by Altman. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

BLUE, WHITE, RED—THREE COLORS BY KRZYSZTOF KIESLOWSKI (Criterion) Inimitable trilogy of stories from one of cinema’s greatest storytellers about life, love and loss was a defining piece of 1990s arthouse moviemaking. Named for the colors of the French flag (which stand for the tenets of the French Revolution—liberty, equality and fraternity), the three films are set in Paris, Warsaw and Geneva, telling a group of ambiguously interconnected tales about people experiencing profound personal disruption, with the genres ranging from tragedy, comedy and a blend of both. Fine turns from Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, Irene Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Three cinema lessons with Kieslowski; Interviews with cast and crew; Select scene commentary with Binoche; Video essay; 1995 documentary on Kieslowski; Three shorts by Kieslowski; Featurettes; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 2.0 surround.

12 ANGRY MEN (Criterion) A disparate group of citizens (Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Ed Begley, E.G. Marshall, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, John Fielder, Jack Klugman, Edward Binns, Joseph Sweeney, George Voskovec, Robert Webber) deliberate over a verdict in a murder trial. Director Sidney Lumet’s feature debut put him, and many of his previously unknown cast, on the cinematic map with this lean, mean, utterly brilliant study of human nature and the relativity of guilt and innocence. Dynamite script from Reginald Rose, based on his own play. Bonuses: Franklin Schaffner’s 1955 TV version; Featurettes; Interviews with Lumet, Rose, screenwriter Walter Bernstein; Kinescope teleplay “Tragedy in a Temporary Town,” directed by Lumet, written by Rose; Interview with cinematographer John Bailey; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

RUSHMORE (Criterion) Wes Anderson’s sophomore outing about an obnoxiously precocious prep schooler (Jason Schwartzman), his obsession with a comely grade school teacher (Olivia Williams) and wary friendship with a self-made millionaire (Bill Murray). Anderson’s finest hour to date as a filmmaker, who skillfully makes otherwise reprehensible characters likeable somehow, all with a skillful grace and aplomb that’s nearly seamless. Great soundtrack of obscure classic rock. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary featuring Anderson, co-writer Owen Wilson, and Schwartzman; Featurettes; “Charlie Rose Show” interview with cast and crew; Audition footage; Storyboards; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

GOLDEN NEEDLES (MGM/Fox) B-movie fun stars Joe Don Baker as a man who seeks a Chinese statue containing seven rare acupuncture needles that supposedly offer eternal youth. Helmed by Enter the Dragon’s Robert Clouse, this is a fun pastiche of James Bond-type espionage thrillers and kung-fu action. Also stars Elizabeth Ashley, Burgess Meredith, Ann Sothern and Jim Kelly. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

TRIPLE TAP (Well Go USA) High-octane thriller from Hong Kong about a competitive marksman who foils a robbery/kidnapping by killing four of the robbers and saving the life of their policeman hostage. When one of the robbers survives, the marksman suddenly finds himself mixed up in police corruption, violent crime and murder. Tough and uncompromising thriller hits hard and offers a myriad of twists and turns. Good show! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (20th Century Fox) Surprisingly exciting and affecting “prequel” to Planet of the Apes, which tells the “what if” tale of how our simian cousins take over the planet from their more advanced relatives. James Franco stars as a pharmacologist who develops an anti-Alzheimer’s drug by testing it on chimpanzees. When the program’s star chimp, Caesar (Andy Serkis, in an amazing turn aided by state-of-the-art CGI). After suffering a series of abuses and humiliations at the hands of humans, Caesar breaks free and forms a simian army that threatens the existence of mankind itself. Dynamite from start to finish, with fine support from Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Tom Felton. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Commentary by director Rupert Wyatt and writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

FINAL DESTINATION 5 (New Line) A man has a premonition that a suspension bridge will collapse, saving a group of his coworkers from a grisly death. Fate, however, had other plans for them, and they must race against time to escape the grim reaper’s cold clutches. Attractive cast gets bumped off in inventive and grotesque ways, which is what appeals to certain types of twisted viewers about films of this ilk, but enough already! We were already bored with part 2…Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Alternate scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

ANOTHER EARTH (20th Century Fox) Around the same time Earth-bound scientists discover another planet that exactly mirrors our own, down to its population of exact doubles, an honors student (co-writer Brit Marling) kills a pregnant woman and her young son in a drunk driving accident, leaving the husband (William Mapother) a broken man. After getting out of prison four years later, the repentant girl tries to make amends to her surviving victim without letting on who she really is. Intriguing blend of sci-fi and morality play works for the most part, is sometimes hampered by its micro-budget. Newcomer Marling is a real find: an ethereal beauty who conjures memories of Ingmar Bergman’s leading ladies. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Music video. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

THE HANGOVER PART II (Warner Bros.) The inept trio (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) from part I find themselves in Bangkok, Thailand with no memory of how they wound up there. While the original managed to be quite funny in spite of itself, this product (and we use that word literally) is utterly devoid of laughter, charm, or any redeeming qualities. Fine actors like Paul Giamatti and Jeffery Tambor have small roles for which they were hopefully well-compensated. Save 102 minutes of your life and avoid! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Gag reel. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

BELLFLOWER (Oscilloscope) Two directionless twenty-somethings (writer/director Evan Glodell and Tyler Dawson) who worship the Mad Max films finds their friendship tested when one gets involved with a woman (Jessie Wiseman) who is bad news, their extreme fantasy lives and their desperate reality come crashing together. Microbudget effort is admirable in its scope and its technical execution, but its story is sorely lacking most of the way through. Just when it feels like the momentum is finally picking up, the film collapses like a deflated soufflé, leaving this viewer most unsatisfied. Still, the film has a strong cult following (mostly of twentysomething males), so judge for yourself. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Outtakes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

POINT BLANK (Magnolia) A male nurse sees his pregnant wife kidnapped before his eyes and soon finds himself being used as a pawn by a vicious master criminal named Sartet, whose bidding he must follow if he wants his wife and child back alive. Breakneck thriller from France literally never quits from the moment it opens with a furious chase scene. Utterly preposterous if you look at it too closely, but also entertaining as hell! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

FRIGHT NIGHT (20th Century Fox) Remake of Tom Holland’s 1986 comic/horror classic about a suburban teen (Anton Yelchin) who finds that a bloodthirsty vampire (Colin Farrell) has moved next door. While the original was a seamless blend of knowing humor, full-throttle horror, and genuine pathos, this soulless retread forgot to include any of the above, and (for the most part) plays it straight, in spite of David Tennant’s best efforts as a Criss Angel-like magician with a vampire obsession. Too bad, as it starts off well, then quickly goes downhill. Watch the original instead (hopefully soon to be on blu-ray), which still holds up beautifully. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Bloopers; Music video. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

THE HELP (Touchstone/Dreamworks) Based on Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel, Emma Stone stars as a tomboyish Southern blue blood in the early ‘60s who finds herself drawn to the Civil Rights movement, specifically helping to empower the African-American woman (Viola Davis) who helped raise her, and the scores of others who have done the same for generations, yet are relegated to little more than slave status in the confines of the Jim Crow South. While it might sound like the makings of a perfect Lifetime movie-of-the-week, The Help is a terrific period drama with very little sentimentality to weigh it down. Bryce Dallas Howard is a hoot playing the antithesis of the fresh-faced good girl she’s come to specialize in, as is rising star Jessica Chastain as an eager new bride from the wrong side of the tracks. Fine support from a dream cast, including Allison Janey, Octavia Spencer, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen, Aunjanue Ellis and Cicely Tyson. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Music video. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

DESIGN FOR LIVING (Criterion) 1933 classic from the great Ernst Lubitsch stars Gary Cooper, Frederic March and Miriam Hopkins as a trio of Americans in Paris who enter into an “understanding” in this very (for its time) risqué, pre-Code sex comedy. Trend-setting rom-com whose influence can still be felt today. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: The Clerk, starring Charles Laughton, Lubitsch’s contribution to the 1932 anthology film If I Had a Million; Select scene commentary by film scholar William Paul; British TV version of Design for Living from 1964, introduced by Noel Coward; Interview with film scholar and screenwriter Joseph McBride. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

THE LADY VANISHES (Criterion) One of Alfred Hitchcock’s great early works (1938), this comic thriller stars Margaret Lockwood as a woman traveling across Europe by train who meets a charming spinster (Dame May Whitty), who then seems to vanish into thin air. The young woman soon turns detective and tries to find what became of her missing friend. Michael Redgrave also stars in this classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by film historian Bruce Eder; Crooks Tour, a 1941 feature starring Basil Radford and Nauton Wayne as their characters from The Lady Vanishes; Excerpts from Francois Truffaut’s 1962 audio interviews with Hitchcock; Video essay by Hitchcock scholar Leonard Leff; Stills gallery. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

CHILLERAMA (Image) At the last night of operation of the final drive-in movie theater in America, a legendary B-movie producer shows a series of rare horror films to a waiting audience. Clever anthology picture is a loving tribute to campy horror flicks, with the five told tales done in deliberately cheesy, over-the-top fashion. Great fun, just don’t expect David Mamet to show up under the screenwriting credits. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Director commentary; Featurettes; Trailers; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

MARGIN CALL (Lionsgate) Set during the early stages of the 2008 recession, an entry-level analyst in an investment firm stumbles upon damaging evidence that could bring down the company and land its principals behind bars. Terrific kitchen sink drama set in the world of Brooks Brothers suits and Rolex watches, with a dream cast doing some of their best work in years. Kudos to Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Demi Moore and the great Stanley Tucci. Aptly described by one critic as “The day the money died,” this might be the best portrait yet of the fall of Wall Street. Bonuses: Director and producer commentary; Featurettes; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER (20th Century Fox) Released in 1952, this is a largely fictionalized “biography” of legendary composer John Philip Souza (well-played by the great Clifton Webb) and his days leading the Marine Corps marching band, circa 1890. Film slows to a crawl when focusing on romance between fresh-faced youngsters, played by the very young and fresh-faced Robert Wagner and Debra Paget. That said, it’s beautifully-shot and designed, with stunning Technicolor cinematography and filled with Souza’s rousing marches. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Pressbook, advertising and still galleries; Trailer. Full screen. Dolby and DTS-HD 2.0 mono.

BLU BAYOU

MGM/Fox releases some great archival titles, starting with Joseph Sargent’s THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE, one of the 1970s’ best thrillers, about a very tough group of hijackers (Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, Earl Hindman) who commandeer a New York City subway car and threaten to kill a hostage a minute if their ransom demands aren’t met. Enter transit cop Walter Matthau, who must outwit the very clever and deadly serious leader of the gang, expertly played by Shaw. One of cinema’s greatest cat-and-mouse games, with the final payoff an absolute doozy. Disc has a sorely missed lack of extras, however. Widescreen. DTS-HD 2.0 mono.

THE BIG COUNTRY is director William Wyler’s 1958 classic about an Easterner (Gregory Peck, who also co-produced with Wyler) who travels west only to find himself in the middle of a feud between two powerful landowning families. Rousing blend of western, sweeping romance and epic drama, with Jerome Moross’ score one of the decade’s best and most iconic. Fine support from Jean Simmons, Burl Ives, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Chuck Connors. Bonuses: Featurette; TV spot; Trailer. Widescreen. DTS-HD 2.0 mono.

QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER is low-key, likable western set Down Under, starring Tom Selleck as an American cowpoke and sharpshooter who finds that his mission to “kill some wild dogs” is actually a thinly-veiled order to slaughter Aboriginals from a wealthy cattle baron (Alan Rickman)’s land. Handsomely shot film is epic in scope, but laid-back in execution. Not a great film, but certainly a serviceable one, with the always genial Selleck ably carrying the show. Bonuses: Documentary; TV spots: Trailer. Widescreen. DTS-HD 2.0 surround.

TORA! TORA! TORA! is director Richard Fleischer’s look at the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, from both the Japanese and American points-of-view (the Japanese scenes were directed by Toshio Masuda). Shot with documentary-like realism, leading up to a spectacular recreation of the attack, truly one of the greatest movie spectacles ever filmed. Fine cast includes Martin Balsam, James Whitmore, E.G. Marshall, Jason Robards. Rousing score by Jerry Goldsmith. Bonuses: Commentary by Fleischer and Japanese film historian Stuart Galbraith IV; Documentary; Featurettes; Photo galleries; Fox Movietone News; Trailer. Widescreen. DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

Lionsgate releases Sylvester Stallone’s THE EXPENDABLES: EXTENDED DIRECTOR’S CUT, the testosterone-fueled tale of mercenaries hired to overthrow a ruthless South American dictator. A major disappointment, especially considering the who’s-who cast of action movie vets (Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Eric Roberts, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke and cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger). Loaded with wall-to-wall explosions, geysers of blood, and zippy one-liners, but also lifeless and dull to the point of being sleep-inducing. The director's cut contains 10 minutes of additional footage plus alternate takes, dialog and soundtrack, but it doesn’t help. Bonuses: Intro by Stallone; Featurettes. Widescreen. DTS-HD 7.1 surround.

eOne releases Pier Paolo Pasolini’s MEDEA, the auteur’s 1969 adaptation of Euripides’ classic play, about the queen/sorceress (legendary diva Maria Callas) who sacrifices everything to win the heart of Jason, leader of the Argonauts, then destroys everything in her path when Jason betrays her. Shot on location in Greece with Pasolini’s signature neo-realism, this is a stunning adaptation of timeless literature, which Pasolini would follow with The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, and Arabian Nights. Bonuses: Documentary by Tony Palmer, About Callas. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL!

eOne releases  IT TAKES A THIEF: THE COMPLETE SERIES, a handsome, 18-disc box set featuring Robert Wagner as Alexander Mundy, TV’s most suave cat burglar-turned-secret agent. From 1968-70, the series’ 65 episodes featured Wagner in one high-wire escapade after another, usually involving the theft of another government’s secrets and a gorgeous dame (or three) waiting in the wings. Malachi Throne is wonderful as Mundy’s reluctant handler, as is Fred Astaire, featured in several episodes as Mundy’s equally-adept burglar father. Bonuses include: Extended feature-length version of pilot episode; Interviews with Wagner and series creator Glen A. Larson; Limited edition senitype reproduced 35mm film frame; 4 piece coaster set; Collectible booklet with retrospective essay. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

BEING HUMAN: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON follows three paranormal twenty-something roommates living in Boston: a vampire (Sam Witwer), a werewolf (Sam Huntington), and a ghost (Meaghan Rath), as they struggle to hide their dark secrets from the world, while helping each other navigate the complexities of living double lives and trying to be human. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Interviews with cast and crew. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

UNDERBELLY: THE TRILOGY is a stunning miniseries from Australia that tells the true story of a crime family that ruled Down Under from the 1970s through the early 2000s. The three parts are “A Tale of Two Cities,” which shows how two low-level criminals changed the face of organized crime in Oz; “The Golden Mile,” a portrait of cops and criminals building an empire of excess; and “War On the Streets,” showing the rise and fall of a master criminal during one of the world’s bloodiest crime wars. A stunning blend of “The Sopranos” and “The Wire,” along with a flavor entirely its own, this dynamite collection is a must-see for lovers of true crime. Bonuses: Featurettes; News reel footage. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Lionsgate releases TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS: SEASON 3, a three-disc collection of the third season’s 19 episodes, which finds the Brown family dealing with all the challenges of day-to-day living: job hassles, marital problems, rebellious children and love troubles. Terrific ensemble cast helps bring the material to life. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

20th Century Fox releases THE SIMPSONS: THE FOURTEENTH SEASON, featuring all 22 episodes of the series that has become an American institution. Loaded with inventive satire, outrageous characters and television’s most inimitable dysfunctional nuclear family. Bonuses: Audio commentary by cast and crew; Intro by series creator Matt Groening; Featurettes; Deleted scenes with commentary; Sketch gallery; Multi-angle animation showcase; Bonus horror episodes. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround. History/New Video releases

See how these amazing people live off the land, catching frogs, squirrels and raccoons, not to mention wrestling alligators with their bare hands! Bonuses: Additional footage. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.

DOCUMENTARY DAYS

Sundance Selects releases Werner Herzog’s CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, a look at the Chauvet Cave in France, which houses the oldest cave drawings yet discovered, dating back some 30,000 years. The art itself is stunning, as is the cinematography by Peter Zehlinger, but this is one of the few times where Herzog’s trademark voice-over becomes grating after a while, and the film quickly wears out its welcome after about the 40 minute mark, seemingly having nowhere else to go, but retreading ground already covered. Would have worked beautifully as a long short subject, but not as a feature-length film. Blu-ray edition also features 3D edition. Bonuses: Ode to the Dawn of Man, a short by Herzog; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

PBS releases THE FABRIC OF THE COSMOS, WITH BRIAN GREENE, a compilation of four episodes of the TV series which looks at space, time, and the very nature of reality. The episodes “What is Space?” “The Illusion of Time,” “Quantum Leap” and “Universe or Multiverse?” all delve into how our perceptions have fooled us, why time might be an illusion, how a hidden realm might hide what would otherwise seem impossible, and more. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

RADIOACTIVE WOLVES looks at the “dead zone” around the former Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Russia after the deadly accident in 1986, leaving nearly 1100 square miles unsafe for humans. In the interim, forests, marshes and animals have reclaimed the land, becoming a post-nuclear Eden of sorts, with the roost being ruled by packs of wolves. Fascinating look at how nature perseveres in the face of adversity. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

JUNGLE EAGLE looks at the Harpy Eagle, the most powerful bird of prey in the world, that lives in the South American rainforest. The top predators in the jungle canopy, feeding primarily on monkeys and sloths. Wildlife filmmaker Fergus Beeley and his team of cameramen were able to capture some extraordinary footage of these magnificent creatures and the world they inhabit. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

MY LIFE AS A TURKEY Interesting look at Joe Hutto, a wildlife artist and naturalist in Florida, who raises a flock of turkeys from egg to adulthood, and the bond that formed between them. Funny, sad and thought-provoking examination of the bond between man and beast. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

FAITH & DOUBT AT GROUND ZERO is a “Frontline” special that looks at how the values of believers and non-believers have been challenged in the post-9/11 world. H.M.S. PINAFORE is a record of Minnesota’s Guthrie Theater production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s legendary operetta. Story of a proud naval captain’s daughter who falls in love with an ordinary sailor in spite of her father’s preference for a more sophisticated suitor has retained all the charm that made it G & S’ first blockbuster. Bonuses: Mini-doc—“Arts Scene: Minnesota; Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Dolby 2.0 stereo.

Four episodes include “I Came to Testify,” “Peace Unveiled,” “The War We Are Living,” and “War Redefined.” Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.

TOO IMPORTANT TO FAIL takes a clear-eyed look at the challenges facing African-American teenage boys as they navigate their way to adulthood. Examining the lives of boys in Philadelphia, Chicago, Oakland and Los Angeles, host Tavis Smiley talks with kids who are achieving against enormous odds and the adults who refuse to let them fail. Powerful and inspirational. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.

eOne releases PABLO FRANCISCO: THEY PUT IT OUT THERE, a record of the comic’s live act in which he waxes on subjects ranging from pop culture, politics and relationships, all with his unique brand of manic energy that can only be compared to a jazz rift wired on espresso. Bonuses: Infomercial; Outtakes; Featurettes; Photo shoot. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

FOR THE YOUNG ‘UNS

Lionsgate releases the fourth (and we hope final) installment of Robert Rodriguez’s children’s franchise: SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, a direct-to-DVD title starring Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara and Jeremy Piven in a strained tale that has baddie Piven attempting (what else?) world domination, with only the intrepid Alba, her two adorable step kids standing in his way. The first couple films were great fun, but leave the dead horse alone, already! Bonuses: Interview with Rodriguez; Deleted scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Disney releases two direct-to-DVD titles: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: THE ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS, in which Mrs. Potts recounts another tale to her audience about Belle and Beast, in which the evil court composer Forte schemed to keep them apart forever during the holidays. Also available on Blu-ray disc. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: BELLE’S MAGICAL WORLD, features Belle, Beast, Cogsworth and all your other favorite characters as they discover how teamwork and friendship can turn a once-gloomy castle into a dazzling palace fit for a princess. Bonuses on both include: Sing-alongs; Featurettes; Music videos. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

PREP & LANDING is a zippy animated tale about two elves, Wayne, a weary veteran, and Lanny, an eager young rookie, who are part of an elite team that travel the globe and prep homes for Santa’s impending visits. DVD PLAYHOUSE—NOVEMBER 2011
By Allen Gardner

TREE OF LIFE (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
KURONEKO (Criterion) Poetic and atmospheric horror fable from director Kaneto Shindo set in war-torn feudal Japan, where samurai are found with their throats ripped out, seemingly by malevolent spirits. When a military hero is chosen to find and confront the supernatural forces killing his comrades, he must slay some inner demons, as well. Gorgeously shot, with an eerie atmosphere of dread that pervades throughout. Stunning special effects, particularly for 1968. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interview with Shindo; Interview with critic Tadao Sato; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 (Warner Bros.) Epic finale of the Harry Potter saga, has Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) finally facing off against arch-enemy Lord Voldemort (Ralph Feinnes). Full of eye-popping special effects and visuals, as expected, but also a film of tremendous heart and terrific suspense. All-star cast of British talent includes Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon, John Hurt, Jason Isaccs, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, and of course, Rupert Gint and Emma Watson as Harry’s comrades-in-wands. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Nine in-depth Featurettes; A conversation between Daniel Radcliffe and J.K. Rowling; Extra Featurettes; Additional scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN ON STRANGER TIDES (Disney) Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, here matching wits with a beautiful woman (Penelope Cruz) from his past, who seeks the legendary Fountain of Youth. The series has been getting slightly stale, but here officially jumps the shark. In spite of all the talent before (Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush) and behind (director Rob Marshall) the camera, everyone feels like they’re just going through the motions, even Depp, whom most people rightfully regard as a national treasure. A real let-down. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interactive featurettes; Commentary by Marshall and producer John DeLuca; Bloopers; LEGO Animated Shorts. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 7.1 surround.
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (Criterion) Pre-Code horror masterpiece from 1932 is nearly unrivaled in its nightmarish atmosphere and truly disturbing images that are every bit as potent today as they must have been nearly 80 years ago. Charles Laughton makes his screen debut as the demented scientist conducting mad genetic experiments on a remote island in the South Seas, offering shelter of sorts to a shipwrecked man (Richard Arlen) who washes up there, but soon finds himself a prisoner. Watch with the lights out! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Uncut theatrical version; Conversation between John Landis and makeup artist Rick Baker, who discuss the film’s landmark makeup effects; Interviews with film historians and critics; Short film from 1976 by Devo; Stills gallery; Trailer. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
CRAZY STUPID LOVE (Warner Bros.) Steve Carell plays Cal Weaver, another average Joe/average schlub whose gorgeous wife (Julianne Moore) wants a divorce. Seeking to reinvent himself as a ladies’ man, Carell enlists the help of master player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) who promises to teach him the ropes in all things female and seduction. Meanwhile, Jacob finds his player mettle tested when he meets comely and smart lady lawyer Emma Stone. Likable enough comedy has lots of charming moments, but was also wildly overpraised by critics upon its release, most of whom were hungry, no doubt, for some funny romantic fare that didn’t involve bodily function jokes aimed at teens. Nice support from Kevin Bacon, Marisa Tomei and John Carroll Lynch. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN (20th Century Fox) Wayne Wang’s latest feature is an adaptation of the best-seller about friendship among two women from rival clans in Feudal China, and their secret communication system through the folds of a white silk fan. Later, in modern day Shanghai, the womens’ ancestors seek to draw inspiration from their great-grandmothers’ past to find their own identities in the hyper-modernized/mechanized present. Visually gorgeous, with Wang’s Eagle eye for detail a major selling point. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: In-depth documentary; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
FANNY & ALEXANDER (Criterion) Ingmar Bergman’s autobiographical tale of two children growing up under the unforgiving hand of their stern father in early 20th century Sweden is one of the master filmmaker’s greatest works. Originally made for Swedish television in 1982, that complete, four hour version is available here for the first time, and is even richer, more beautiful and more complex than the three hour theatrical version which was intended by Bergman to be his cinematic swan song (but thankfully wasn’t). Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Theatrical and television version; Bergman’s documentary The Making of Fanny & Alexander; Conversation between Bergman and critic Nilks Petter Sundgren from 1984; Interviews with cast and crew; Stills gallery; Costume and production design galleries; Commentary by film scholar Peter Cowie; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
SOUTH OF HEAVEN
(Synapse Films) Weird, wacky and wild blend of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers that must be seen to be believed. Two brothers (Aaron Nee, Adam Nee) get caught up in a case of mistaken identity, kidnapping, extortion and revenge—and that’s just in the first ten minutes. Writer/director J.L. Vara has fashioned a wholly originally satire of the darkest order, with fine support from a terrific cast, including Jon Gries, Thomas Jay Ryan and Shea Whigham, who nearly steals the show as one of cinema’s most twisted, and convincing sociopaths. If you’re thrown by the film’s low budgeted weirdness during the first act, stick with it, and enjoy the quirky, dangerously twisted ride down a celluloid road to hell. Bonuses: Audio commentaries by Wigham, Vara, cast and crew, producers Brian Udovich, Glenn Abbott, Eric Inman, and Jason Polstein, critics Todd Brown, Scott Weinberg and Devin Faraci; Three short films by Vara. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE HEART SPECIALIST (20th Century Fox) Writer/director Dennis Cooper’s smart, funny romantic comedy about a cocky, womanizing Harvard Medical School grad (Brian White) who gets lessons beyond the E.R. from a senior doctor (Wood Harris) under whom he is interning. Zoe Saldana co-stars as Harris’ knowing girlfriend who also teaches the young doc a thing or two about the Rx of love, life and medicine. Bonuses: Additional scenes. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
ATTACK ON LENINGRAD (eOne) World War II’s most iconic, and infamous, battle is given epic treatment in this Russian production, with some truly eye-popping battle scenes and set pieces, but fails to achieve the greatness it reaches for when the bombs start dropping and its cast starts speaking. Mira Sorvino, Gabriel Byrne and Armin Mueller-Stahl lead the most Eastern European cast (with Sorvino speaking in a highly-questionable British accent). Writer/director Alexander Buravsky seems as though he studied all those star-studded WW II pictures from the ‘60s, which tried to balance great action set pieces with soapy subplots from its gorgeous international casts. It was middling then, and really creaks now. Worth seeing for its good points, but not likely to hold a place in most cinefiles’ permanent libraries. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interview with Burvasky; Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE FOUR FEATHERS (Criterion) An early Technicolor masterpiece, from director Zoltan Korda and producer Alexander Kora, in 1939, is the finest of the many adaptations of A.E.W. Mason’s classic 1902 adventure novel about British colonial soldiers and their exploits in late 19th century Africa. Fine cast includes Ralph Richardson, John Clements, and June Duprez, with a fine score from the great Miklos Rozsa and gorgeous cinematography from Georges Perinal and Osmond Borradaile. Also available on Blu-ray disc, which is the perfect format to reproduce the beauty of early Technicolor. Bonuses: Commentary by film historian Charles Drazin; Interview with David Korda; Behind-the-scenes footage; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
BAARIA (Image) Writer/director Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso)’s autobiographical tale looks at generations of life in the small Sicilian town of Bagheria, nicknamed “Barria” by its residents. Sprawling epic is mostly successful in its ensemble stories, with some amazing imagery, reminiscent of Fellini (and particularly of his masterpiece Amarcord, of which this is a first cousin), nicely balanced with Tornatore’s signature blend of sentimentality and pathos. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Tornatore; Featurettes; Deleted scenes; Photo and poster galleries. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
HORRIBLE BOSSES (Warner Bros./New Line) Three working stiffs (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekis, and Charlie Day) are mad as hell and not taking it anymore as they plan concurrent revenge against their horrific, soul-crushing, rage-inducing bosses (Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey). For the most part, very funny, always raunchy and immensely entertaining, although it does go over-the-top one too many times for this reviewer. Nice support from Donald Sutherland, Jamie Foxx, and a welcome cameo from the great Bob Newhart. Also features extended, unrated cut and theatrical R-rated cut. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
HARAKIRI (Criterion) A masterless samurai begs a feudal lord for permission to commit ritual suicide on his property so he can die with honor. The samurai in the lord’s employ think it’s a trick on the part of the desperate ronin to gain a position of power within the lord’s circle. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Prize of 1962, director Masaki Kobayashi ‘s masterful blend of sociology, melodrama and pathos is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction by Japanese film historian Donald Richie; Interviews with Kobayashi, star Tatsuya Nakadai, screenwriter Shinobu Hashimoto; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
MAIN STREET (Magnolia) Author/screenwriter Horton Foote’s swan song is a picaresque tale about a once-prosperous North Carolina tobacco town that has fallen on hard times. When an outsider (Colin Firth) arrives, promising an era of new prosperity if he’s allowed to bring new industry and businesses to their hamlet, the residents find themselves divided. Fine support from a dream cast (Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, Amber Tamblyn, Orlando Bloom) raises the bar on this quiet little drama, but its ensemble plot remains too diffuse for the viewer to ever empathize with any one character, resulting in a pleasant, albeit detached, experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Deleted scenes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL (Magnet) Two hillbillies (Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine) take a weekend off at their West Virginia mountain cabin , only to find themselves under siege from a group of preppy collegians who assume they’re both chainsaw-wielding killer/buggerers of the Deliverance variety. Shamelessly campy, over-the-top bloody, and also much, much better than it has any reason to be, this gleefully goofy comic thriller is one of the most inventive films of its genre since Shawn of the Dead. Katrina Bowden adds lovely scenery to the proceedings. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Outtakes; Storyboards; Commentary by director Eli Craig, Labine, and Tudyk; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
IDENTIFICATION OF A WOMAN (Criterion) Michelangelo Antonioni’s bleak, haunting drama about a filmmaker (the great Tomas Milian) who embarks on affairs with two wildly divergent women after his wife leaves him. Renowned for its sexual explicitness at the time of its release (1982), the film is less shocking today for its ample helpings of flesh, but remains a pungent, and scathing commentary on male/female relations and the circular battle of the sexes. Antonioni’s last film before suffering a stroke which nearly incapacitated him until his death. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (20th Century Fox) Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson star in this adaptation of Sara Gruen’s best-seller, the love story between a veterinary student (Pattinson) and a circus performer (Witherspoon) whose mutual love for an elephant brings them together, while her jealous husband (Christoph Waltz) threatens to destroy them both. Well-meaning in the extreme and gorgeous to look at, but also lifeless and uninvolving. Too bad, particularly with talents like screenwriter Richard LaGravenese and director Francis Lawrence working behind the camera. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by Lawrence; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
DAZED AND CONFUSED (Criterion) A disparate group of teens is followed during the last day of high school in an Austin, TX. suburb circa 1976 in this delightful time capsule from writer/director Richard Linklater, rightfully compared to George Lucas’ American Graffiti for its evocative portrait of young adults coming-of-age. Terrific young cast of stars-to-be, including Matthew McConaughy, Ben Affleck, Adam Goldberg, Parker Posey, Rory Cochrane, as well as should-have-been-bigger stars such as Joey Lauren Adams, Michelle Burke, Wiley Wiggins and Jason London make this one of those rare films that begs repeated viewings. Terrific soundtrack of period music just ups the ante even more. Not to be missed! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Linklater; Documentary on film’s production; Behind the scenes footage; Audition footage and deleted scenes; Featurettes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
HELLDRIVER (Well Go USA) After an alien-spawned, mysterious mist blankets northern Japan, the country is torn in half, with the top being populated by flesh-hungry zombies who must journey south to find food. A savoir arrives in the form of Kika, a high school girl whose beauty is only matched by her skill with a chainsaw against hungry flesh-eaters. Deliberately over-the-top and goofy, this gorefest should appeal to aficionados of the genre, while others (myself included) who have had their fill of zombies, vampires and the like in recent years, stay away! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Director’s introduction; Three spin-off short films; Featurette; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE PASSAGE (MGM/Fox) During WW II, a Basque peasant (Anthony Quinn) smuggles a French scientist (James Mason) and his family (Kay Lenz, Patricia Neal) into Spain, while being pursued by a psychotic SS officer (Malcolm McDowell). Director J. Lee Thompson delivers an unabashedly trashy melodrama, with McDowell’s turn a high point in modern camp (and also what makes the movie so much fun). Christopher Lee, Marcel Bozuffi and Michael Lonsdale also make appearances, and help make the proceedings far better than they have any business being. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
THE WHITE BUS (MGM/Fox) Lindsay Anderson’s follow-up to his auspicious debut with This Sporting Life (1963) was filmed and released four years later, and tells the story of a fragile young girl (Patricia Healey) who is taken from the brink of suicide in London, back to her small town in the North of England. Sharp, often brutal social commentary on the futility of life for most Brits of working class origin, this film is a fascinating time capsule and touches on many of the themes that were explored more in-depth in Anderson’s next film, the masterpiece If...Produced by Tony Richardson’s company, Woodfall. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
THE MUSIC LOVERS (MGM/Fox) Ken Russell’s deliriously cinematic biopic about the ill-fated love affair between Peter Tchaikovsky (Richard Chamberlain), who wrestled with his homosexuality his entire life, and Antonina Milyukova (Glenda Jackson) is a feast for the senses, and displays Russell’s wizardry behind the camera better than any other film in his career. Marvelous soundtrack featuring the composer’s greatest works, conducted by Andre Previn. Screenplay by journalist and TV host Melvyn Bragg. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
TRIGGER (eOne) Rock solid Canadian production about former bandmates (Molly Parker and Tracy Wright) who reunite to play a benefit concert. After a heartfelt tete-a-tete, the women face down and examine their friendship, warts-and-all. Plays more like a photographed play than something written directly for the screen, but still works quite well, thanks to a good script and powerful turns by the two leads. Bonuses: Table reading footage; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
ATLAS SHRUGGED PART I (20th Century Fox) Almost inexplicable low budget filming of Ayn Rand’s seemingly unfilmable signature novel is at best a curiosity and at its worst, an abomination of Biblical proportions. Set in the near-future of 2016, with the U.S. on the brink of economic collapse and the emphasis changing from individual achievement to collective mediocrity, with its most gifted citizens targeted for elimination. Rand’s 1957 novel, some might say rightfully, certainly seems prescient on many levels today, but the team that produced this amateur-hour version of the story seem to be living up to Rand’s worst nightmare prophesized in the story they purport to be telling. God help us if part II ever makes it to celluloid! Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Filmmaker commentary. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
SHAOLIN (Well Go USA) In the early days of the Republic of China, a handful of greedy warlords, left over from the Feudal era, attempt to fuel war and strife to retain their foothold on a changing society. When one of them, the brutal Hou Jie (Andy Lau) seeks refuge with the gentle Shaolin monks, whom he previously betrayed. When his traitorous former protégée (Nicholas Tse) tracks him down, Hou must adapt to the ways of the Shaolin to stop the monster he created. Jackie Chan offers fine support in this excellent drama, which expectedly, also features some incredible martial arts action. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

BLU BAYOU
Criterion leads the pack this month, with their BD release of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s SALO, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM, the controversial auteur’s notorious final film (he was brutally murdered days after its 1975 release) takes the Marquis de Sade’s story of torture and degradation and re-sets it in the waning days of Fascist Italy. Arguably the most disgusting, and debated, “art” film ever made, this reviewer counts it as one of neo-realisms great masterpieces. Tough going, to be sure, but for discriminating viewers, an experience that is sure to stay with you, and a message that remains timely as ever (think about some of the images that came out of Abu Ghraib prison, and compare them to those in this film). Bonuses: Trailer; Three documentaries on the film; Interviews with film scholars and crew members. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
MGM/Fox releases David Lynch’s 1986 masterpiece BLUE VELVET, in a beautiful, 25th anniversary edition. Described by Lynch as “The Hardy Boys go to hell,” this surreal, horrific, and often hilarious tale stars Kyle MacLachlan as a naïve college student whose dangerous obsession with a torch singer (Isabella Rossellini) plunges the young man into a nightmarish world of kidnapping, murder and madness, not to mention an encounter with what might be the screen’s most terrifying and hypnotic villain, Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper, in his greatest performance, which was criminally-overlooked by Oscar). Nearly indescribable beyond that, other than the fact that it remains one of “the great films” that must be seen multiple times to fully appreciate. Fine support from Dean Stockwell, Laura Dern, Hope Lange, George Dickerson and Brad Dourif. Bonuses: Nearly an hour of lost footage; Original “Siskel & Ebert” review; Featurettes; Trailer/TV spots; Outtakes. Widescreen. DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
Shout Factory releases THE GRATEFUL DEAD MOVIE, co-directed by the band’s frontman, Jerry Garcia, is a superlative record of the band’s October, 1974 concert at San Francisco’s Winterland arena, showcasing the band at the peak of their powers. Beautifully restored and remastered for BD, with five different audio mixes, and two different formats, with one Blu-ray and one regular DVD in the collection. Bonuses: Over 95 minutes of bonus concert footage; Bonus songs transferred from original 16mm camera negative; Visible lyrics option; Two documentaries about the film’s production; TV commercial from ’74; Multicamera and multitrack audio demonstration; Photo gallery. Full screen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1
MVD releases IGGY AND THE STOOGES RAW POWER LIVE: IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS, where six fans were selected to film The Stooges’ September 3, 2010 reunion concert as the band performed “Raw Power” to a stunned audience at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival. Following the show, the same fans did extensive interviews with Iggy Pop and the band. Terrific stuff and a must for all Iggy/Stooges fans! Bonuses: Exclusive interviews with Iggy, James & Scott; Contest submission videos; Linter notes from Mike Watt. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
Blue Underground releases two titles from Italian gore maestro Lucio Fulci. ZOMBIE (1979) is regarded by most of his fans as Fulci’s “masterpiece,” a sort of unofficial sequel to George Romero’s masterpiece Dawn of the Dead, where a mad doctor (former British heartthrob Richard Johnson) is conducting experiments on his Caribbean island hideaway that result in a plague of the living dead. In this reviewer’s opinion, Mr. Fulci couldn’t direct traffic, and this film is living proof of that, utterly inept on every level, unless Fulci’s signature zoom shots of spurting wounds and beautiful women getting their eyeballs gouged out are your idea of entertainment. Not to mention those whip pan shots that would give football players with 19-inch necks whiplash. Utter garbage, and in no way worthy of the A+ treatment given it on this handsomely-produced disc. Two disc set. Bonuses: Commentary by star Ian McCullouch and Diabolik Magazine editor Jason J. Slater; Trailers, TV and radio spots; Featurettes; Interviews with cast and crew; Interview with and introduction by Guillermo del Toro. Widescreen. DTS-HD 7.1 surround and Dolby 5.1 surround. Fulci’s follow-up, 1981’s THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY, is about a young family that relocates from crime-ridden New York City to seemingly idyllic New England, into a gorgeous, rambling house that turns out to have very bad karma, indeed, with previous owner Dr. Freudstein (yes, you read it right) having performed monstrous experiments within the confines of the home’s genteel walls. Another excuse for excessive gore and dismemberment, courtesy of some very impressive make-up special effects, but that’s about it. Bonuses: Featurettes; Interviews with cast and crew; Deleted scene; Trailers; TV spot; Posters and still galleries. Widescreen. DTS-HD 2.0 stereo.
Anchor Bay releases THE HOWLING REBORN, an in-name only “reboot” of the original 1980 classic, with the mark of the werewolf finding itself wreaking havoc upon a class of high schoolers. Again, some impressive make-up special effects, but otherwise a real stinker. Bonuses: Commentary by writer/director Joe Nimziki and actor Lindsey Shaw; Featurette; Storyboard gallery. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
HBO releases Angelina Jolie’s star-making turn in GIA (UNRATED), a harrowing biopic about supermodel Gia Carangi, whose reign over the modeling world of the late ‘70s in New York was surpassed by her descent into the subculture of disco, hard drugs and harder sex. Jolie creates one of the most complex and harrowing portraits of an addictive personality ever committed to film, so much so that we soon forget that we’re watching one of the world’s biggest stars as she seamlessly disappears into Gia’s tragic skin. Fine support from Faye Dunaway, Mercedes Reuhl, and Elizabeth Mitchell. Widescreen. DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
THE CANNONBALL RUN is the 1981 box office smash starring Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dan Marin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jackie Chan, and Jamie Farr (get the idea?), all of whom take part in a winner-take-all cross country auto race. Produced by chopsocky vet Raymond Chow and directed by legendary stuntman Hal Needam, if you’re willing to accept the film’s unabashed awfulness (which all the cast most certainly does), you’re in for a great time. If you’re a fan of Bergman, look elsewhere. Bonuses: Commentary by Needham and producer Albert S. Ruddy. Widescreen. DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL!PBS releases PAGE EIGHT, a smart, clever political thriller starring Billy Nighy in a contemporary spy thriller from playwright David Hare, who also directed. Nighy plays a veteran MI5 officer who finds his life topsy-turvy after the death of his mentor (Michael Gambon) brings him into contact with a Top Secret file that threatens the stability of the entire agency. Fine support from Rachel Weisz, Judy Davis, and Ralph Fiennes, just add to the brilliance of this drama, that’s sure to become a modern classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.

Bonuses: Featurettes. DOCUMENTARY DAYS
MPI/Sundance Selects releases Errol Morris’ TABLOID, a scathing, funny and painful portrait of Joyce McKinney, woman who gained tabloid infamy in the late ‘70s UK after traveling from the States to “rescue” her Mormon missionary lover from the clutches of his church. Has to be seen to be believed, but Morris delivers his signature blend of sociological insight, character study and jaw-dropping revelations with such panache, the just-under 90 minutes of the film goes by in a flash. A must-see! Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

TOP SECRET AMERICA is another “Frontline,” this time examining the invisible legacies of 9/11: a series of clandestine government and private agencies designed to hunt terrorists and prevent future attacks on the U.S. HISTORY DETECTIVES follows a group of academics who travel around the country to explore stories behind local folklore, prominent figures and family legends. Bonuses: 400 page, hardback companion book; “Modern Marvels: The Statue of Liberty.” Full screen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.
Lionsgate releases THE PEOPLE VS. GEORGE LUCAS, a (slightly) satiric account of the love-hate relationship between Star Wars fans and the iconic, reclusive filmmaker who brought the film series and its characters to life. Utilizing interviews from over 600 hours of footage, the film paints a humorous, and sometimes sad, portrait of the subculture that has grown up around Star Wars and (to a lesser but still significant extent) Indiana Jones. Bonuses: Filmmaker commentary; Featurettes; Music video. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
MVD releases NAZI HUNTERS, offering eight spellbinding, suspenseful portraits of Nazi war criminals who were hunted down and brought to trial, as well as a few who managed to elude justice to the end of their days. Columbia/Monkey Wrench releases Cameron Crowe’s documentary PEARL JAM TWENTY, chronicling the years leading up to the iconic band’s formation and the chaos that ensued after their rise to superstardom. Told as only a rock music aficionado and expert like Crowe could, this is a seamless blend of intimate interviews with the band’s members, their fans and colleagues, as well as amazing concert footage that proves why the band still endures after two decades. Bonuses: Featurettes; Bonus interviews. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
eOne releases THE CAPTAINS, a doc written and directed by William Shatner, in which the iconic thespian interviews all six actors (Chris Pine, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula) who have played the commander of the Starship Enterprise since Shatner first assumed the mantle in the 1960s. Charming, insightful and intimate portrait of actors and why they love their work. Bonuses: Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

DVD PLAYHOUSE—OCTOBER 2011
By Allen Gardner

TERRI (20th Century Fox) An awkward, obese teen (Jacob Wysocki) finds himself forming an odd friendship with his equally left-of-center vice-principal (John C. Reilly), who decides to help the boy navigate his way through adolescence’s rocky road. Low key film is filled with pathos and humor, but is ultimately too laid back for its own good (not to mention too long). Worth seeing for young Wysocki’s amazing, completely natural performance, and Reilly’s goofy charm. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
MR. NICE (MPI) Rhys Ifans stars in the true story of Howard Marks, a Welsh-born Oxford grad who gained the most notoriety in his life for being the UK’s biggest hashish smuggler during the ‘70s and ‘80s, when he wasn’t busy spying for Her Majesty’s government, hanging out with a psychotic pal (David Thewlis) from the IRA, and finally doing a long stint in prison to do penance for his colorful life. Ifans gives a tour-de-force performance, with fine support from Chloe Sevigny and Crispin Glover. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE TRIP (IFC Films) Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play, more or less, themselves, taking a trip to the north of England to dine in some fine restaurants and stay in the region’s best B&Bs. Along the way, they have a series of comic duels with some priceless moments (their Michael Caine-off being a highlight), with Coogan bravely playing himself in a most unflattering light. Best described as My Dinner With Andre On the Road, and for most of the journey, it’s quite enjoyable, but would have been even better at about 90 minutes. Another quirky gem from director Michael Winterbottom. Bonuses: Trailer; Featurettes; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
WE ARE THE NIGHT (IFC Films) A troubled girl (Karoline Herfurth) is brought into the fold of a sexy cabal of female vampires (Nina Hoss, Jennifer Ulrich, Anna Fischer), and soon finds herself wreaking gleeful havoc all over Berlin. Stylish, scary and quite erotic little gem from director Dennis Gansel, who manages to put a fresh spin on the now-stale vampire genre. Bonuses: Trailer; Interviews; Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE SILENT HOUSE (LA CASA MUDA) (IFC Films) Nifty little horror exercise, based on a true story that supposedly happened in Uruguay during the 1940s. When a teenage girl and her father travel to an isolated house in the country, they find the house to be not only in disrepair, but a force is inside it that is very much alive—and wants them dead. Shot in one continuous 78 minute take, the filmmakers show great skill in the execution of the film’s technical side, although the script and dialogue (perhaps the subtitle translation) feels rather half-baked at times. Still, worth seeing. Bonuses: Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (Criterion) Victor Sjostrom’s silent classic from 1921 tells the very grim fairy tale of the last person who dies on New Year’s Eve before the clock strikes twelve, and is then forced to be the driver of Death’s chariot, tirelessly collecting souls for the next year. Sjostrom himself stars as a ne’er-do-well louse who is shown the error of his ways, Dickens-style, and is offered a shot at redemption through the unconditional love of a Salvation Army sister. One of silent cinema’s most innovative films, which influenced countless directors, including Ingmar Bergman, to step behind the camera. Groundbreaking special effects and hand-tinted color sequences are stunning nearly a century later. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Two musical scores; Commentary by film historian Casper Tybjerg; 1981 interview with Bergman; Visual essay by Peter Cowie. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 2.0
THE STOOL PIGEON (Well Go USA) Tough Hong Kong policier about a detective (Nick Leung) who causes his snitch to be gravely wounded. Starting from scratch, he must recruit a new man to go undercover in a ruthless gang of jewel thieves. Gritty look at honor among cops and thieves alike, and the fragile code that holds their tenuous relationships together. Well-directed by HK vet Dante Lam. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurettes; Trailers. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE LAST CIRCUS (Magnolia) Twisted love triangle between a Sad Clown, a Happy Clown, and a beautiful acrobat in what must be the most bizarre circus since Tod Browning’s classic Freaks. Told with great style and wild abandon by director Alex De La Iglesia, it’s grand guignol meets David Lynch of the highest order. Cult status is almost assured for this beautifully-crafted shocker. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Trailers and teasers. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
GREEN LANTERN—EXTENDED CUT (Warner Bros.) A human (Ryan Reynolds) is recruited by an elite forces of intergalactic protectors called the Green Lantern Corps to help protect the Earth and the universe from the evil villain Parallax. DC Comics’ venerable character (who dates to WW II) is brought to shaky life in this CGI misfire, with what has to be the ugliest special effects and production design to date from a major studio release. Reynolds is always a likeable presence, but even his easy-going charisma can’t save this dud. Supporting cast includes Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett and Tim Robbins. And yes, the movie STILL sucks! Directed by Martin (Casino Royale) Campbell. Ditto. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Picture-in-picture commentary; Photo and storyboard galleries; Digital comic; Deleted scenes; Trailers and TV spots; 9 minutes of extra footage in extended version. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
CARLOS (Criterion) Olivier Assayas’ sprawling epic about the life and times of infamous terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez aka “Carlos the Jackal,” whose violent left-wing activism in the ‘70s and ‘80s made him one of the world’s most wanted men. Edgar Ramirez is a powerhouse in the titular role, infusing Carlos with a fiery blend of idealism, charisma and undiluted narcissism that ultimately causes him to self-immolate. 5 ½ hour epic is never boring, and moves at lightning pace. A truly magnificent cinematic achievement. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with cast and crew; Select scene commentary; Featurettes and documentaries; Trailer; Booklet featuring essays by critics and scholars, as well as a timeline of Carlos’ life. Widescreen Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
TEMPEST (Touchstone/Miramax) Modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s final play stars Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Chris Cooper, Tom Conti, Alan Cumming, Djimon Honsou, David Straithairn, and Felicity Jones, among others. Exiled to a magical island, the sorceress Prospera (Mirren) conjures up a storm that shipwrecks her enemies and unleashes her powers for revenge. Helmed by the great Julie Taymor (whose film adaptation of Titus was one of the best Shakespeare-to-celluloid efforts), the film is a gorgeous, moving spectacle acted by a stellar cast who bring the Bard’s words vividly to life. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Documentary; Commentary by Taymor; Music video. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
A QUIET PLACE IN THE COUNTRY (MGM/Fox) Franco Nero plays an artist who moves into an isolated country villa, hoping he’ll be able to focus more on his work, with occasional time-outs for trysts with his matron/lover (Vanessa Redgrave). He soon discovers the house is haunted by the spirit of a young woman who was brutally murdered during WW II. Definitely a film of its time (1968), with director Elio Petri (The 10th Victim, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion) dishing out a host of psychedelic and metaphorical images, which ultimately obscure what little plot there is. Not always coherent, but never boring, and beautiful to look at. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
HICKEY & BOGGS (MGM/Fox) Bill Cosby and Robert Culp, who also directed, star in this Walter Hill-scripted tale about two L.A. private eyes investigating the case of a missing girl, and quickly find themselves in over their heads, bringing death to everyone around them, intentionally or otherwise. Downbeat to a fault and relentlessly brutal (but was able to secure a PG-rating in 1972), but also ultra-realistic in its cinema-verite style, a refreshing change from today’s action films, most of which look and feel like mouthwash ads with bullets. Fine supporting cast includes James Woods, Ed Lauter, Michael Moriarity and Vincent Gardenia. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
THE GLORY STOMPERS (MGM/Fox) Dennis Hopper, two years prior to Easy Rider, stars as the leader of a vicious biker gang who steals the girlfriend of his rival, prompting an all-out war between the two factions. Almost Showgirls-level bad, with dialogue that must’ve been hard to type, much less speak (Hopper says “man” more than Al Pacino says “fuck” in Scarface), but of note as a time capsule piece, and also as the film that convinced Hopper to make a “realistic” biker picture along with buddy Peter Fonda (who had to do penance for his own biker turkey, The Wild Angels, released the same year). Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
MIMIC THE DIRECTOR’S CUT (Miramax) Guillermo Del Toro’s first American effort is a nifty biological thriller about a team of scientists (Mira Sorvino, Charles S. Dutton, Josh Brolin) who create a breed of insect to wipe out a deadly strain of cockroaches. Three years later—their solution gets out of hand. Like most of Del Toro’s films, this is inventive, stunning, and purely cinematic entertainment, although the final third does lose some steam. Still, a must-see film from a master of the cinema. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Del Toro; Featurettes; Deleted scenes; Storyboards; Gag reel; Trailer; Seven minutes of extra footage. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 and DTS-HD 7.1 surround.
MOBY DICK (RHI) Herman Melville’s classic novel gets an update with this made for cable production, with William Hurt filling the boots of Captain Ahab, a seafaring man obsessed with killing an elusive and deadly albino whale, even at the cost of his ship and the lives of his crew. Ethan Hawke, Donald Sutherland, and Gillian Anderson co-star in this handsome production, which nearly rivals John Huston’s cinematic classic in its grandeur and scope. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
SUBMARINO (Focus Features) Two brothers from an abusive background, one an ex-con, the other a single father wrestling with demons of his own, struggle to find a way to reconnect and get their lives together. Powerful drama pulls no punches, with helmer Thomas Winterberg (The Celebration) providing more dramatic grit for the dysfunctional family mill. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
THE PRESENCE (Lionsgate) Mira Sorvino stars as a woman who travels to a remote lakeside cabin and soon finds herself stalked by an apparition who grows obsessive of her, particularly with the surprise arrival of her boyfriend. Spare, intelligent supernatural thriller focuses on suspense and what isn’t seen, instead of gore and shock effects. Sorvino is fine, as always, and is supported by a fine cast. Bonuses: Commentary by writer/director Tom Provost; Storyboards; Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL! Mill Creek releases seasons one and two of THAT ‘70S SHOW, the hit series about a groovy family from The Brady Bunch era that wasn’t so clean-cut, but a hell of a lot more fun. Great cast includes Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson, Wilmer Valderrama, and Kurtwood Smith. 26 and 25 episodes respectively, in each set. Bonuses: Featurettes. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
The first and second seasons of ROSEANNE also arrive on DVD, with comic Rosanne Barr playing a thinly-veiled portrait of herself as a blue collar mom trying to make ends meet with husband Dan (John Goodman) and their three kids. Winner of multiple Emmys and Golden Globe awards, and one of TV’s classics of the 1990s. Bonuses: Interviews with cast and crew; Featurettes; Highlight reels. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN’s first two seasons also touch down on DVD this month, featuring John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson, French Stewart, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jane Curtin, and Wayne Knight in this comic farce about an alien nuclear family trying to fit in amongst the denizens of a small Ohio town. Very funny. Bonuses: Interviews with cast and crew; Bloopers; Featurettes. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
Severin/MPI releases SNUFF BOX: THE COMPLETE SERIES, starring Rich Fulcher and Matt Berry in the legendary BBC series about a pair of depraved hangmen. Sort of a blend of Monty Python and sit-com, with a truly twisted style all its own. One of those rare television shows that must be seen to be believed! Loaded with bonuses, including Featurettes, outtakes, commentary by Berry, Fulcher and director Michael Cumming, as well as a bonus music CD. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
eOne releases CALL ME FITZ: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON, starring Jason Priestly as the sleaziest of used car salesmen who suddenly starts conversing with his inner conscience (Ernie Grunwald), a do-gooder who is intent on healing Fritz’s mangled psyche. Truly original, very clever and extremely funny. Bonuses: Featurettes; Blooper reel; Season 2 sneak peak. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
Warner Bros. releases V: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON, offering more human vs. Visitor action in this slick, exciting update of the hit ‘80s series. Season two focuses on a resistance group called The Fifth Column rising up against the alien invaders. Smart sci-fi, loaded with contemporary social and political metaphors. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Interviews with cast and crew; Deleted scenes; Blooper reel. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
20th Century Fox releases LIE TO ME: THE COMPLETE THIRD AND FINAL SEASON, starring Tim Roth as the world’s greatest interrogator and truth-finder. Intelligent show with Roth’s multi-layered portrait a standout amongst the mostly-two-dimensional network TV characters these days. Fine support from Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines and Monica Raymond. 13 episodes on 4 discs. A real shame this winner got cancelled! Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurette. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
RAISING HOPE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON is from the mind of “My Name is Earl” creator Greg Garcia, about the pains of parenthood and being part of a dysfunctional family. When 23 year-old Jimmy Chance has a life-altering experience of unexpected fatherhood after a one-night stand, he finds himself a single dad and must juggle all the implications therein. Funny, if not always successful comedy, but worth a look. Cloris Leachman is a hoot! Bonuses: Unaired pilot; Extended cut; Featurettes; Commentary by cast and crew on pilot; Deleted scenes; Gag reel. Widescreen Dolby 5.1 surround.
MODERN FAMILY: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON won six Emmy’s for its smart, sassy brand of comedy that takes a seriocomic look at what it means to be part of a large, extended family in these turbulent times. Terrific cast includes Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Table read footage; Music video; Interviews with cast and crew. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA: THE COMPLETE SEASON 6 offers more irreverent fun from the gang (Danny De Vito, Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney) that hangs their hats in the city of brotherly love. Un-PC to the extreme, and very funny as a result. De Vito is always a delight to watch, and he’s at his unhinged best in this TV gem. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Trivia challenge; Featurettes; “Lethal Weapon 5 extended cut”; Blooper reel; Deleted and extended scenes; Audio commentary by cast and crew; Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.
GLEE: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON follows New Directions as they try to move on from their devastating loss at Regionals, with the ever-effervescent Sue Snell (Jane Lynch) leading the pack with her own brand of battle cries. Bonuses: Featurettes; Bonus song. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-HD 5.1 surround.

Meanwhile, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) tries to locate his biological father and Robin (Cobie Smulders) finally starts to feel like a real New Yorker. Very funny sit-com for smart adults. 24 episodes on 3 discs. Bonuses: Commentary by cast and crew; Featurettes; Deleted scenes; Gag reel. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Field, and William Beck.

All are relevant, fascinating topics, but these discs all contain a major flaw: the quality of the audio is so poor, it’s difficult to hear what His Holiness is saying most of the time. Subtitles would have helped immensely. As is, they’re a better concept than they are an execution. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
